Meanwhile, two traders with the same 55% win rate and 1:2 R:R can produce completely different account trajectories purely through position sizing. One grows steadily. The other blows up. What a Trading Edge Actually Means
A trading edge is a positive expected value — a strategy that, over a large number of trades, produces more money than it loses. The formula:
Expected Value = (Win Rate × Win Amount) − (Loss Rate × Loss Amount)

- EV = (0.55 × $200) − (0.45 × $100) = $110 − $45 = +$65 per trade
This strategy has a $65 positive expected value per trade. Over 100 trades, the expected profit is $6,500.
But here is what kills the edge: variance. In the short term, even a positive EV strategy can lose 10–15 trades in a row. How you survive those losing streaks — while keeping the account intact long enough for the edge to express itself — is entirely a function of position sizing.

The Kelly Criterion provides the mathematically optimal fraction of capital to risk per trade to maximize long-run growth rate:
Kelly % = Win Rate − (Loss Rate ÷ R:R)
Example: 55% win rate, 1:2 R:R
Kelly % = 0.55 − (0.45 ÷ 2) = 0.55 − 0.225 = 32.5%
32.5% risk per trade is the theoretical optimum for maximum account growth. In practice, this would be catastrophic — a 10-trade losing streak would destroy 97% of the account.
Why Kelly doesn’t work in practice:
- Win rate estimates are imprecise (your true win rate is unknown)
- R:R varies by trade (not fixed at 1:2 every time)
- Psychological pressure at large position sizes destroys execution quality
- Sequence of returns matters — a bad run at full Kelly before a good run means no capital for the good run
Professional traders use “Fractional Kelly” — typically 10–25% of full Kelly. At 10% Kelly on our example: 3.25% risk per trade. Still high. Most use 0.5–2% empirically because it produces sustainable results across the realities of trading, not theoretical simulations.
Consistency as Competitive Advantage
Most retail traders have inconsistent position sizing — sometimes 0.5%, sometimes 2%, sometimes 5% when they’re “really confident.” This randomness destroys the mathematical relationship between edge and outcome.
