Step-by-Step

How to Use This Calculator for FTMO

1

Enter Your Current FTMO Account Equity

Use your live account equity — not the starting challenge balance. If you started with $100,000 and are now at $98,500, enter $98,500. Your position size should always be based on what's actually in the account right now.

2

Set Risk to 0.5% (Trade90 Recommended) or Max 1%

Trade90 recommends 0.5% as your default risk per trade on funded challenges. If you have a very high-conviction setup and are well inside your drawdown limits, you may go up to 1% — but never more than 1% on any single trade while on a funded account.

3

Enter Your Exact Entry and Stop Loss Levels

Use your actual planned entry price and stop loss price — not approximate levels. A 5-pip error on a 30-pip stop is a 17% sizing error. Be precise: the calculator converts the pip distance to dollars automatically for all 45+ supported instruments.

4

Check the Lot Size and Confirm Your Plan

Review the calculated lot size before placing the order. Confirm it aligns with your daily risk budget — if you've already placed a trade today, add the new risk to your existing exposure and ensure the combined total stays below 1% of account equity.

Worked Examples

FTMO Position Sizing Examples

Real calculations for the most commonly traded instruments on FTMO challenges. These examples use 0.5% risk as the default.

Example 1

EUR/USD — $100k Account

Account: $100,000
Risk: 0.5% = $500
Stop Loss: 30 pips
Pip Value: $10/std lot
Lot Size: 1.67 lots

$500 ÷ (30 × $10) = 1.67

Example 2

Gold (XAU/USD) — $50k Account

Account: $50,000
Risk: 0.5% = $250
Stop Loss: 200 points
Pip Value: $20/std lot
Lot Size: 0.0625 lots

$250 ÷ (200 × $20) = 0.0625

Example 3

NAS100 — $25k Account

Account: $25,000
Risk: 0.5% = $125
Stop Loss: 100 points
Pip Value: ~$1/std lot
Lot Size: 1.25 lots

$125 ÷ (100 × $1) = 1.25

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What FTMO account sizes does this work for?

All of them. Enter any account size — $10,000, $25,000, $50,000, $100,000, or $200,000 — and the calculator will compute the correct lot size for your chosen risk percentage and stop loss distance. There are no presets or restrictions on account size input.

Should I use starting balance or current equity?

Always use your current account equity. If you started with $100,000 and have grown to $104,500, enter $104,500 — your risk dollar amount scales up proportionally. If you're down to $96,000, enter $96,000 — your risk dollar amount scales down, naturally protecting your remaining drawdown buffer.

What if I trade multiple instruments on FTMO?

Track your daily risk exposure across all open and pending positions. Using 0.5% on EUR/USD and 0.5% on Gold simultaneously means you've consumed your full 1% daily risk budget. The Trade90 guideline is clear: combined open risk should never exceed 1% of account equity at any point during the trading day.
